Public hanging would definitely be a deterrence to murder. Set up a permanent gallows at your local city hall. Make local inmates sit in the front row. This may sound a little rough but filling prisons with lifers is a costly affair. Hanging costs a little rope. Humane too.

As soon as you endorse the attitude that “killing people is okay so long as they deserve it” you are pretty much operating at or below the moral level of the average murderer.

Much better to stick to the view that killing people should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
