There is no justification for maintaining the death penalty. It simply does not work as a deterrant and mistakes are made.
Any Christian…true Christian… not one who is simply paying lip service to the Christian faith, knows it is wrong. There were no criminals put to death in Europe last year. The USA along with China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq are among the few who still carry out this barbaric practice which ammounts to state institutionalised murder.
Just at who the USA is in league with… do we really want to be compared to that lot?

David, you are right in the long run.
I am not a christian, but I have christian values. I live in europe and can see that a change needs to happen in American society in order to get rid of the death penalty. American society needs to solve the problem of violence and crime from the bottom up.
People need to raise their children with good, solid values. Even in families where parents are divorced, living apart or whatever, the fathers need to be involved with their children’s entrance into the adult world.
Many european countries have laws and traditions that make living in a world with dissolved families easier for the children. That is one of the things that will help Americans. Divorce, pregnancy out of wedlock happens. Many of the people on death row have this background.
I believe that if men and women are allowed to fullfill their natural rolls in society, the volume of voilent crime will be reduced. I also believe that there are laws and cultural norms in America that make just being men and women problematic.

I AM NOT FOR THE DEATH PENALTY AT ALL.
HERE IN CANADA, WE ABOLISHED IT..WITH GOOD REASON. IN THE PAST, SOME PEOPLE HAD BEEN PUT TO DEATH IN CANADA, YEARS AGO, AND SUBSEQUENTLY FOUND INNOCENT.

My only grandchild was murdered. I was given the choice between life without parole or the death penalty. I chose life. It saved the pain of a trial, a mountain of money for the State, and the guilt involved in having chosen to kill a human being (no matter how unattractive he was). The death penalty would have reduced me to his level and I’m a better person than that.

There is evidence that the death penalty causes more murders. It’s an effect called brutalization. It’s not clear if the subsequent murderers feel that our society is inherently violent (identifying with the first murderer) or if they feel that violence is justified as a remedy for a perceived wrong (identifying with the state and feeling that they can take justice into their own hands, using death as a legitimate tool of redressing wrongs). Regardless of the cause, it is a statistical reality and if we are concerned with saving lives, then we should consider these victims as well.
