I’m from the UK so I don’t have to live under the draconian laws of the US but from outside the box it certainly looks as if it isn’t working. When the UK abolished it, murders certainly didn’t rise. It doesn’t work. How much longer is it going to take you to work that out?

I agree with capital punishment, but only for particularly gruesome murders. The alternative is to feed these scum in jail for the rest of their lives – with your taxes!

However I do not agree with it for kidnapper or rapists, because it would make them more likely to murder the victim. Let them rot in jail for a long time, where hopefully they will get a dose of their own medicine.

There was a time when I did not support the death penalty. However, over the last twenty to thirty years, murders have become so commonplace, yet so horrible that I just gradually started supporting the death penalty. Murderers just show such a complete disregard for those they kill…a person wants out of a marriage – just kill the spouse. People don’t want their child – just kill it. Got a beef with someone – just kill them. You want sex..just take it, then kill the person afterward. Need money..just rob someone then kill them. Serial killers just pick some unsuspecting person, gender, age, and size doesn’t particularly matter…and kill them in some of the most heinous ways. It’s planned, thought out, and carried through. Others just go in someplace a shooting, not caring who or how many they kill. Then there are those who rape, commit sodomy on babies, young children, women and even men. They just take what they want. These people know they won’t get too much jail time so they basically laugh at the law. What else can one say? I’m not actually a fan of the death penalty, but I just do not think the taxpayers should pay for their crimes, their trials, and their welfare sitting in a prison for their life time either.

Capital punishment has not been available purely for the crime of rape of an adult woman since Coker v. Georgia in 1977. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coker_v._Georgia.

I am not a fan of capital punishment, I think that it actually creates more problems than it solves. There’s no conclusive evidence that it deters anyone and there is evidence that it might actually increase the number of murders. Research brutalization. I had to do research for my criminal law class on capital punishment and there just doesn’t seem to be a good objective reason to have it. If we wish to be a society that has it for subjective reasons, that’s our collective right, but in the long run, I think it serves no useful purpose and it’s probably on the way out.

I don’t support capital punishment. Most western countries don’t, including my home nation of Canada.

It is not a deterrent. It is not supported by any Canadian police force (including my brother, a 25 year police staff sergeant). It does not help the national psyche. It is immoral, and it will end, and our children will look back on this time period in dismay.

I support capital punishment but the penalty should not be mandatory. It definitely should not be available because someone insults a “God”. It should be for the most heinous of murders when the evidence is overwhelming and a jury recommends it. To many women have cried rape to make this a capital offence. DNA evidence have in some cases proven that the convicted rapist was in fact innocent. All capital punishment cases should be reviewed by a panel prior to the sentence being carried out
