         Sam, the question is, and this is not an ignorant question, is capital punishment really a “must”? Live in prison on death roll is much worse; death is the quick and easy way out not to mention it cost taxpayers more to kill the offender that it cost to keep him/her in a tiny cell 23/7 with terrible food and treatment from the guards. The guards are as bad if not worse than the inmates. Should they be put to death also since it is not inhumane? What about the men and women on the jury who deliver the death sentence – should they go to the death machine also since it is not inhumane?

         I feel it is a bit extreme to say that a criminal has no conscience. Yes the family of the victim have lost their loved one, but what about the family of the criminal. Surely you cannot think that they have no conscience too? Do we really need two deaths and two times the suffering? Isnt it better for the criminal to serve their time and then start a better and new life. One life has been taken so we should work to improve anothers. just how i feel

      I was hoping we are past the era when anyone would advocate capital punishment. Alas, there are many who do, and I am, unfortunately, powerless to relegate them to live in the Middle Ages. Respect for the sanctity of human life extends to those who did not respect it; otherwise it is just American cowboy “tooth for tooth”.       I don’t entirely support capital punishment, but in a way it is good. We can always think that there is no need of giving death penalty to a murderer, but think from the person who has lost somebody dear to the deceased. Take the case of Mumbai Terror attacks. The only terrorist who was captured alive was sentenced to death today. He has more options like an appeal in High Court if that fails then in Supreme Court and lastly an appeal to the president of INDIA. But I certainly bet, all the kith and kin of poor people who died in Mumbai will pray for Kasab’s death.
      The judge while pronouncing the judgment against Kasab stated a clear point that by allowing the survival of such terrorist will be a lingering danger to INDIA perhaps the whole world. He had his point when he mentioned the Kandahar hijack where in INDIA had to exchange some terrorist in return of passengers on board.

      Project innocence in ‘Dallas County has exonerated 265 people falsely convicted, some had been incarcerated for more than 20 years. It is abundantly evident that our criminal justice system is seriously flawed. So long as the convicted person lives that mistake can be rectified. I say no executions until we have corrected the source of these errors and regain full confidence in in the system.

   There are more people in the world that believe it is ok to shoot a person, to pick a woman/little girl at random and rape and kill her, than there are people that pray.

   Too many people die at the hands of monsters every day. Too many people die at the hands of monsters that have been released from prisons due to over crowding or because they’ve ‘done their time’.

   Murderers and rapists, are NOT sorry for what they did…they’re only sorry that they got CAUGHT!

   If you murder someone, you have committed the ultimate crime and should be dealt with just as you have lived. As you live so shall you die. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

   And none of this wait 15 years on death row crap. You deserve immediate justice…you get 15 minutes to live and then get taken out back to meet your maker. So many repeat offenders would not have ‘repeated’ had this been the case.

   I often wonder about people who truly believe the death penalty is a justifyable sentence…

   I was that person in 2004 where I didnt have to acknowledge the person or family behind the sentence, 2005 that changed pretty damned quickly.

   Its unfortunate that sometimes the only times we as humans are willing to look beyond text and see the emotions and people behind this barbaric sentence is when ones loved one is immersed in the situation.

      You are, of course, quite right. Demented people do not suffer but cause others to suffer. So, some leniency is required. It is not entirely their fault; indeed it is no one’s fault , however someone needs to be punished. The victims victim!
      Psychopaths; the educated people in charge, don’t give a shit. They just want their money or kicks.
      When caught out they really do deserve to die.
      Unfortunateley this never happens so I suggest wholesale slaughter of all Members Of Parliament.

   I am for and against the restoration of capital punishment. People who kill people, for whatever reason, are pitiable. Whether they know not what they do; or more importantly why, they are suspect. They can never be trusted again ( like MP’s ) so should serve a ” life ” sentence untill they die or be put to death as soon as possible.
   Ergo: after appropriate psychological tests they should be identified as survivors / suicidors.
   Thus; the former you hang, the latter you incarcerate.

   Just have a look at South Africa, where the death penalty was abolished in 1994…crime is out of control…over 3000 farmers have been murdered since that date.

   With out the death penalty as a form of deterrent, people will continue being murdered for their cellular phones and the perpetrators will be out on bail before their victims have been buried.

   Keep the death penalty, or pay the price with innocent lives

   Opinions can be divided of course depending on whether it is your child lying dead in the morgue, or your husband facing the death penalty. It depends on whether it is your mother that has been brutally bashed by an alcoholic enraged husband over years, who punches that once too often, and she hits him with a brick while sleeping!!

   The death penalty should be reserved for the most ghastly of crimes, particularly against children and mobs against the individual…..

   Killing is always barbaric but society needs to have a real deterrent in place that would make a person think twice if in taking a life, he knowingly forfeits his own at the same time. The strong would always overcome the weak!

    I do not believe in the death sentence since this allows the guilty to escape a greater punishment in this life.

    Capital Punishment usually includes other sentences which are no longer allowed under our law system.

    We will not see any end to the growing violence which is now way out of hand in Melbourne, with armed attacks now occurring daily, Until the Law once more can sentence a violent person to the Birch.

    This really was a great deterrent, not just in the execution, but in the preparations which had the guilty person having to be examined medically beforehand, knowing that the sentence would be repeated each year.

    These people want violence – then give them violence
    BRING BACK THE BIRCH.

    I’m French and Buddhist and I’m very much against death Penalty ! it is barbaric and inhuman , most victims families are against it , and so should be anyone understanding the message of one’s religion ! American prisons are unworth a Democracy , and the biggest one of them ! people are been toturated with tasers , burning sprays , contention chairs , told they ‘re the state ‘s property ! and on death row where they spends decades of heat , cold with frodzen toilet , noise , handcuffs to got take a shower ,and this every day , hour and minute for decades ! horrowful food and then been executed aafter all this !     I have seen someone calling himself Michel de Montaigne who wrote …..a 500 years old quotation !
    Michel de Montaigne was a french philosopher who lived 5 CENTURIES AGO ! so his quotation is in regard of the ” punishment ” an actual American word for centuries past inhuman treatments ! My daughter who is dual national wrote her Master’s memoir on Capital Punishment in the USA after i was pen writting with Odell Barnes executed in 2000 in Texas , despite the fact that neither Robert Badinter who was Ministry of Justice in France when death Penalty was abolished in 1981 , nor the President of the french Human Rights Organisation found ANY PROOF of his guilt !

    As a deterrent it doesn’t work. But as the ultimate punishment? The fact that DNA has shown that there were innocent people on Death Row in prisons in the USA is an excellent reason to oppose the death penalty. But the fact that people who were not guilty of murder have been executed in the USA doesn’t seem to concern the protents of the death penalty. Why let an innocent victim of it – or multiple victims – spoil a ” lynch party “? Hey, is it true that the USA is supposed to be Christian? They seem to have more in common with the Chinese and North Korean Communists than Jesus Christ. Saudi Arabia loves the death penalty too!

    On checking South African murder statistics since 2000 on Wikipedia I found that the percentage has decreased contrary to the claims of Anton Magus and Geoff Tucker. However it has been alleged that this source is not completly reliable. Nevertheless I will accept the statistics they provide until something more reliable is provided.

    I know there are any number of emotive reasons – but in the name of reason, capital punishement makes no sense at all. What if you make a mistake and convict the wrong person? It can never be justified.

    If it is deemed a crime to deliberately take a life, it is a crime whether carried out by an individual or the state.

    Why did I figure Mr. Brown was probably African American? Could it be that it is mostly black men who end up on death row? The combination of wealth and whiteness almost always leads to a lesser penalty.

    We certainly agree a murderer does not “deserve” to live; but as Christians we also believe that life-or-death judgment is God’s, not man’s, and that life in prison without parole is adequate to protect society. Who among us is really qualified to decide which of us “deserves” to live?

       it actually costs more to kill an inmate on death row than it does to keep them in prison for life so your spouting about tax payers is actually a load of bull. Also murder is murder whoever carries it out. also what is your opinion on the many innocent lives that have been lost through the death penalty does it mean that the person who sentenced him/her to death and the person who pulled the lever for the chair or released the fluid into their body to cause there death should also be sentenced to death????

    Most do deserve the death penalty, however; Texas has the highest rate of death sentences in the U.S. Many innocent have been put to death when DNA test were run later. Also, one was executed in Texas after 38 years on death roll! Many are executed and remain in prison for years to life when what they need is mental treatment for the drugs they were on. I have heard investigators in court say they need mental services and not life in prison but they get life; often times these inmates go insane and are sent to Jester Unit with no hope of recovery and await their death sentence. Often these inmates are asked if they are OK by a doctor once every 6 months when the inmates have no idea if they are ok, insane, or what was even said to them. Many have been on death roll for so many years while they were on drugs and are completely changed and much older. Even the guards have said they are good people, educate, help the other inmates and calm tempers in prison. Texas Parole Board keeps prisoners and denies inmates parole based on the previous month persentages – what ever that has to do with anything. Also, Rissie Owens (Chairman of the Parole Board and who got her position by her husband) will deny parole to an inmate who files a suit against her. I have known this to happen many times. One inmate has been there for 32 years and has received 3 college degrees and a masters (graduated at the top of his class not just in prison but the intire class)and has never had one diciplinary against them. Now since he filed a suit against him she gave him a 1 year set off, then a 3 year set off and then a 5 year set off!

    How can a society claim to be good for it’s inhabitants if it commits murder itself?
    Also, the severity of punishment has no correlation with the amount of crime committed (look it up if you disagree). The problem is clearly not people who commit the crimes, but what leads them to commit the crime in the first place.

    The question is “Is taking this action likely to harm anyone, and, if so, does the harm outweigh the harms prevented if we take this action?”
    The answer, in this situation, is clearly yes. The harms prevented, if the perpertrator is kept incarcerated with sufficent security to prevent them inflicting harm on others, are basically the cost of keeping them incarcerated. The harm inflicted, on the other hand, is someone’s life. That’s a pretty major harm.
    We do not have a right, much less a duty, to inflict harm of any sort on other people, except in self-defense or in defense of others.
    Someone’s actions, no matter how terrible, do not provide a basis for inflicting similar actions on them. Two wrongs never make a right, they just compound the evil.
    To those of you who are christian: Don’t you think that, if they deserve anything, god will provide exactly what they deserve, in hell? Don’t you think it’s just a teensy bit arrogant to take that responsiblity, and commit evil acts with the shaky justification of “But he started it”?
    No matter what people have done, no matter who they are, no matter what we would like to do to them, they still deserve our compassion.
